Simple and automatic
How it works
- Choose an imageSelect a common raster image, including a phone HEIC photo.
- Set size and formatEnter the maximum KB or MB and choose Auto, JPEG, PNG, WebP or available AVIF.
- Download the resultUtiliBits finds the best-quality version that fits.
Why compress to a specific size?
Application forms, government portals, job sites, profile-photo tools and email services often reject images above a fixed file-size limit. This compressor aims below that limit automatically, so you do not have to guess at quality settings.
Need a different image change?
Use the Image Cropper to trim the frame, the Image Resizer for exact dimensions or the Image Converter to change only the file format.
Supported image formats
- Input
- JPEG/JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, HEIF, AVIF, GIF, BMP and ordinary single-page TIFF/TIF images.
- Output
- Auto, JPEG, PNG, WebP and, where browser encoding support is available, AVIF.
Auto keeps the original when it already fits or chooses a practical format when processing is needed. If you explicitly choose JPEG, transparent areas use a white background.
Your image stays private
The image is decoded and compressed locally by your browser. It is not uploaded, sent to an API or stored by UtiliBits. Generated images do not retain embedded metadata such as EXIF or GPS data, but their visual orientation is applied before processing. An unchanged original that already fits the limit retains its metadata.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress an image to a specific file size?
Choose an image, enter the maximum size in KB or MB, then select Reduce image size. UtiliBits searches for the highest practical quality at or below that limit and reduces the dimensions only when needed.
Can I compress a HEIC photo from my iPhone?
Yes. UtiliBits supports HEIC and HEIF photos, including common images created by iPhones. Processing happens in your browser, and you can convert the result to JPEG, PNG or WebP, or AVIF when your browser supports it.
What image formats are supported?
Input supports JPEG/JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, HEIF, AVIF, GIF, BMP and ordinary single-page TIFF/TIF images. The selectable outputs are Auto, JPEG, PNG, WebP and, when browser encoding support is available, AVIF.
Can I choose JPEG, PNG or WebP output?
Yes. Choose JPEG, PNG or WebP directly, or leave Auto selected to keep an image that already fits or choose a practical format when processing is needed. AVIF is also available when your browser passes an encoding check.
Will compressing an image reduce its quality?
Usually, but UtiliBits searches for the highest quality that meets your limit. It only reduces dimensions when changing image quality is not enough.
What happens to animated GIFs?
Animation is never removed silently. If processing is needed, UtiliBits explains that it will use the first frame and asks you to confirm before continuing.
Does UtiliBits upload my image?
No. Processing happens entirely in your browser and the image never leaves your device.
What happens to photo metadata such as EXIF or GPS data?
Generated images do not keep EXIF, GPS, IPTC or XMP metadata; visual orientation is applied before processing. If the original file is already within your limit and no conversion is requested, UtiliBits downloads that unchanged original, including its existing metadata.
