Create a value in three steps
How to generate a password
- Choose a modeSelect Password, Passphrase or PIN.
- Set your optionsUse a preset or adjust the available requirements.
- Generate and saveCreate one or more values, then copy the one you need and store it safely.
Password, passphrase and PIN modes
Password mode creates a character-based password. Its presets provide useful starting points, while Advanced options let you choose character types, set minimum counts, exclude ambiguous characters and control adjacent repeats.
Passphrase mode selects words independently from the bundled EFF Large Wordlist. You can use fixed or random separators, change capitalisation and add a number or symbol. In random separator mode, the generator chooses each separator separately.
PIN mode creates a numeric value with your chosen length. You can also exclude simple obvious patterns. Third-party services set their own password and PIN rules, so check their requirements before saving a value.
What the entropy estimate means
The entropy figure describes randomness in the generation process. It does not predict an exact crack time or guarantee account security. Passwords with extra constraints use the generator's conservative lower-bound estimate.
Generation stays in your browser
The generator uses your browser's cryptographically secure random-number generator. Generated passwords, passphrases and PINs are not uploaded, sent to UtiliBits or persisted by UtiliBits. Clipboard access occurs only when you select Copy.
Use a unique value for each account and store it safely, preferably in a reputable password manager. Read more about local file and data handling.
Frequently asked questions
Are passwords generated locally?
Yes. The generator uses your browser's cryptographically secure random-number generator. Passwords, passphrases and PINs are not uploaded to UtiliBits.
Does UtiliBits store generated passwords?
No. UtiliBits does not persist generated values. Clipboard access occurs only when you select Copy.
What is a passphrase?
A passphrase is a sequence of words. This generator selects words independently from the bundled EFF Large Wordlist and can vary their separators, capitalisation and additions.
What does the entropy figure mean?
It estimates the randomness in the generation process, not an exact crack time. Passwords with extra constraints use the generator's conservative lower-bound estimate.
Can I generate passwords for specific requirements?
Yes. Advanced options let you set character types, minimum counts and other restrictions. A third-party service may still have requirements that differ from your settings.
What does "exclude ambiguous characters" mean?
It removes characters that can look alike, which can make a password easier to read or type accurately.
Can I generate PINs?
Yes. PIN mode creates a random PIN with your chosen length and can exclude simple obvious patterns.
What are random passphrase separators?
Random separators let the generator choose a separator independently between each pair of words instead of using one fixed separator throughout.
